Together with Jakub and Małgorzata Golata, The Sue Ryder Foundation is initiating a new project – The Ukrainian Refugee Hub – facilitating the transport of refugees from the Ukrainian border and providing them with food and immediate shelter.
Many of the refugees who are now arriving at the Polish border – elderly, mothers, and children – have escaped from Ukrainian territories in the heat of war. These areas are facing lack of nourishment, water, medical aid, and electricity. Civilians face escalating violence from Russian military forces. In many cases, the refugees this initiative seeks to help underwent a harrowing journey to safety, under the threat of bombardment by enemy soldiers.
Jakub and Gosia Golata have been able to save 72 mothers and children. We are relieved to say that all the families are now safe with their Polish hosts, and some of the children have already been admitted to Polish schools (as of March 21, 2022).
Even if it is just a drop in the ocean of the 2 million refugees that have entered Poland until now, we need to continue this effort.
Jakub and Gosia arranged the transport and housing of 48 refugees at any one time through cooperation with the Park Hotel, Tryszczyn outside Bydgoszcz and a local bus company. The hotel has a 180 bed capacity, and with the help of your generous donations we hope to be able to utilize each and every one of them.
All contributions to The Ukrainian Refugee Hub fund are used to cover transport, food, and shelter costs. The Sue Ryder Foundation in Poland, Jakub, and Gosia seek to bring as many refugees as possible to the hotel to allow them to rest on their journey. The wider goal of this initiative is to then find them more permanent homes locally as well as across Europe.
